Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.
We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like standard biological terror, but inside Together exists a deep examination about our choices in loving one another.
A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities
Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for a decade. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their roles, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.
The narrative begins when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the country for her career. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the tropes end. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.
A Paranormal Spark
While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.
The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together neatly and delivers them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.
Layered Performances
A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He fears the notion of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.
The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making one partner or the other the obvious villain.
Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that come with any relationship after ten years. At their core, they still love one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their future together.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the supernatural forces in Together represent these concerns of codependency and fully committing to another person, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other symbiotically.
A Controversial Conclusion
Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for staying single. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience today.
Together is currently playing on Hulu as of this moment.
