Thousands Join Pro-Palestine Demonstrations as Organisers Promise to Persist in Activism
Tens of thousands gathered across Australia at pro-Palestinian protests, with organizers promising to persist in activism after a truce agreement brokered by the former US president in Gaza initially appeared to be holding.
Sydney Protest Draws Large Crowd
In the harbor city, the activist collective said thirty thousand participants had marched from the central park to a nearby green space in the city center after a intended demonstration to the iconic venue was restricted by the state judicial body last week.
Law enforcement estimated 8,000 people joined the local rally, with a official stating there had been "minimal disturbances".
Countrywide Protests Mark Anniversary
Rallies were also organized in Victoria's capital, eastern city and Western Australian city on the day of protest to commemorate two years of killing in Gaza after armed incidents on October 7th, 2023 resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths in the neighboring country.
"Regarding our cause, we'll definitely persist to protest for a free Palestine... for self-determination in Gaza, for humanitarian assistance to enter and for locals to reconstruct their homes," commented one organiser.
Varied Responses to Truce Arrangement
Many protesters shared confidence that the truce might bring permanent peace. Several expressed concerns of Trump's involvement and called on activists to continue urging the Australian government to apply measures and end the trade in military goods.
Shamikh Badra, a Palestinian Australian residing in the city, expressed he desired the arrangement could permit him to assist his senior relative, who is currently in the region without medical attention, to his current home, and to find and bury his family members, who have been unaccounted for since that year.
Jewish Community Holds Commemoration
Separately, many individuals participated in a Jewish community commemoration on the evening in the city's eastern areas to mark the second anniversary of the 2023 incidents. Geoffrey Majzner, the brother of Galit Carbone, an Australian citizen who was killed during the attacks, was planned to address.
There were wishes for quick release of 20 remaining hostages in Gaza and the victims of the attacks. The diplomatic representative, the diplomat, honored the strength of victims. The participants reacted negatively when he spoke about the head of government and the top diplomat.
Maritime Protesters Share Experiences
Sydney's pro-Palestine rally earlier heard from speakers including several locals released from Israeli detention after the stopping of the protest boats in recent weeks.
A participant, his damaged arm after it was reportedly injured in an Israeli prison, informed that limited details were clear about the peace agreement. Global humanitarian groups, including humanitarian bodies, were getting ready to access the territory.
"Given the ongoing conditions where there's a harsh and unlawful restriction on the region," commented McEwen, boat protesters would keep working to deliver aid by sea.
Abubakir Rafiq, who arrived home on Friday, gave an moving testimony describing his detention with dozens of fellow detainees in Israel's Ketziot prison.

The NSW Greens MP the legislator told the crowd: "It's unacceptable to permit a situation where American leadership shapes the destiny of Palestinians to be the nature of existence we tolerate."
Another organiser who submitted the original application to demonstrate at the famous location claimed that the protesters could have safely headed to the famous harbourside venue. The senior police representative had earlier informed the legal authority that the plan had "disaster written all over it".
