McDonald's has removed a Christmas commercial created using AI after encountering significant criticism on social media.

The 45-second spot was produced using generative AI clips and was first published online for the Dutch branch of McDonald's back on 6 December.

Social Media Criticism and Decision to Pull

Shortly after its release, commenters lambasted the implementation of AI in the commercial. Several labeled it "disturbing" and "jarringly assembled".

"This moment is an valuable learning as we examine the proper use of generative technology," commented a representative from McDonald's Netherlands.

The commercial was created for the brand by Netherlands-based company TBWA\Neboko and American firm The Sweetshop. It depicted a series of situations that often go badly over the festive season, with the theme "the worst time of the year".

A Growing Movement of AI in Advertising

Campaigns that incorporate AI-created content have become a growing phenomenon among large companies, especially for the holiday campaign season.

  • Coca-Cola has similarly launched consecutive AI-generated Christmas commercials.
  • Inherent Limitations: Because clips created with current AI video tools are prone to become unstable the more extended they are, the majority of such clips tend to be only a few seconds in length.
  • Broader Implications: The ad also raised concerns about automation in the advertising industry, with some commenters stating it might reduce work for production staff.

Response from the Production Company

Following the ad being taken down, The Sweetshop's head, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the project.

She stated, the production process took "seven weeks" and involved producing "thousands of takes" which were then shaped during the edit "in the same way we would on any standard production".

"This wasn't an AI gimmick," she commented. "It was a film."

Mixed Audience Sentiment

While the McDonald's ad was mostly criticized, the reception for some AI-assisted campaigns has been varied.

For instance, a recent AI-generated Christmas spot from another major brand according to analysis achieved a significant "positive sentiment rating" from online commenters.

However, various brands have also received backlash for employing AI in advertising. Italian brand Valentino, for example, was criticized for ads that critics described as "cheap" and "uncanny".

The incident illustrates the continuing discussion within the marketing and production sectors about the trade-off between new tools and creative integrity.
