Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Displacement Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system caused widespread flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of millions of people across the country.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented rising waters climbing to rooftop levels and homes being swept away by strong flows.

Our team rescued 14 individuals stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. “A father frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts peaked at over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service stated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for those still missing were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making cyclones stronger and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Scientists report that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events cause approximately millions in dollars in losses to the country annually.

The nation’s leader issued a state of emergency last week because of the severe damage from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
