Nepal's Political Scene Sees Major Alliance Formed Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Discussions Underway

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
