Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs extended their winning streak on the road in the top division and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of excellent saves to guarantee the London club went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to review the goal on the screen and the official ruled that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates the manager's team into third place in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and sit half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in duties at each end of the field

After a drab midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a mere attempts on goal, the manager chose the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an free the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - added his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defensive duties, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have worn off somewhat and fans headed to the gates after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a major concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised centre-forwards - had netted only one league goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor tally on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, even with having space and opportunity to readjust for a simpler shot that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, was unable to influence the game after replacing the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. The majority of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly delivered dangerous balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
