Explosion Costs 3 Police Officers While Executing Eviction Procedure in the Verona Area
A trio of officers lost their lives and more than a dozen additional individuals sustained injuries in a seemingly premeditated gas explosion at a farmhouse in Italy's north.
Sequence of Events
The blast was triggered as police and firefighters went into the house close to Verona to enforce an removal notice for three siblings aged in their 50s and 60s.
Each of the three officers killed were members of the Carabinieri military police.
Arrests and Aftermath
A man and a woman got detained at the location and a third person who fled following the incident was located shortly later. The trio have been transported to the hospital.
The detonation could be noticed approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the location revealed the property turned into a heap of debris.
“This is a time for grieving,” commented the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who added that attempts had been made to remove the three siblings in the earlier times.
Background and Motive
The leader of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, said the residence was facing an eviction order due to financial obligations accumulated by the property owners.
Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to engage the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the siblings triggered the blast.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander the police commander told news outlets.
A gas canister had been ignited, and the blast directly hit our members,” he said.
Incendiary devices were also discovered at the residence, the minister said.
Injuries and Destruction
The wounded by the incident included 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a emergency responder.
As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the building was in a poor condition and had no electricity.
The official thought the blast had occurred on a story above the access point and stated to journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the blast, he mentioned members had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the gas canisters being turned on”.
Local Response
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants stated to Italian media, adding that the family members had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than vacate the property.
“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”
Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in paying tribute to the trio of personnel who had lost their lives in the service of their country.
