2026 is Poised to Be Hailed as the Year of the Croaking Craze.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was highly engaging, my biggest takeaway was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
A surprising total of five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these amphibious creatures. Considering a gathering of frogs is called an army, it feels they are taking over the industry.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Croaking characters are not at all new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a niche presence. But, their prevalence has seemingly surged in recent times.
A simple search for "frog game" on Steam yields an staggering number of results. While, some of these are obscure titles, a significant portion are legitimate amphibian adventures.
A Data-Driven Dive
To quantify this rise, I undertook a detailed review into the recent history of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My methodology was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.
The findings paint a clear picture: a marked rise from under 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.
This significant surge prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The creature's rising status in the public consciousness is somewhat visible elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. However, the trend in gaming seems particularly powerful.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
Frankly, this is a trend I can get behind. Frogs possess inherent appealing traits for game developers.
- Weird Little Guys: They are perfectly suited to be designed as memorable characters that often become a standout feature in any game.
- Unique Gameplay: Their long tongues and prehensile tongues facilitate a myriad of innovative control schemes.
Several the featured titles clearly utilize these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
The Leap Into 2026
So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has even started—and the chance for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the largest year yet.
If these games are received positively—and based on past trends, games from this showcase often do—we could very well be witnessing a genuine amphibian entertainment revival.
